Farewell, Spring Semester ... Welcome, Summer!
Spring 2014 may be over but newer, better things are taking shape in the College library.
Coming up first is the impending revamp of the Rio Hondo College
website and with it a new look to the library’s webpage. The rollout date is
still to be announced but the library’s URL will subsequently change from the
current http://library.riohondo.edu
to the new http://www.riohondo.edu/library.
The library team led by librarian Adele Enright has been working hard to create
a library website that will be consistent with the College’s look and format
while keeping the same information now available to students and adding
enhancements to the website’s functionalities.
Look for new library furniture later in the summer, thanks to a Verizon
grant to purchase popular reading materials. A
variety of seating styles – all comfortable and conducive to reading – will be
placed in the foyer area where the paperbacks are now kept as well as in the
Tree House.
Also look for limited editions of bookmarks featuring the four winners
of the Six Words Contest (“Love Your Library in Six Words”) who wrote pithy
expressions of what the College library means to them. Christina Bitterman,
Ignacio Gonzalez, Justine Reyes, and Jessica Vasquez each won a package of gift
cards to a book store, coffee shop, and fast food restaurant for turning in the
most descriptive entries out of more than 200 submissions from Reading students.
They received their prizes during April’s Writes of Spring celebration. Congratulations
on your great work!
If you haven’t yet made their acquaintance, drop by the reference desk to
welcome our new adjunct librarians: Jennifer Bidwell, Sally Ellis, Mellanie
Reeve, and Claudia Rivas. They have just completed their first semester in the Rio
library where they have hit the ground running, bringing their concurrent experience
in university, community college, and high school libraries to play at the reference
desk and classroom instruction. They join our fine group of adjunct librarians
who help enrich our students’ academic and research experience, namely Vivian
Arenas-Vellanoweth, Benjamin Barba, Gabriel Beeler, Karen Bourgaize, William
Enright, Carolyn Oldham, Tod Shacklett, and Gina Singh.
And as we officially end the Spring 2014 semester today, the library
congratulates all graduating students and wish you all the best as you continue
on to university or to your new careers. Come visit us again to let us know how
you’re doing – we’d love to hear from you.
