Congratulations to our Mover & Shaker!

The Rio Hondo College Library proudly congratulates adjunct librarian Monique Delatte for being chosen by Library Journal as one of 2010’s Movers and Shakers in the library world.

Selected in the category of Change Agents, Monique was cited for her success in teen programming and for obtaining a total of more than $57,000 in grants over the last two years for both Rio Hondo College and La Puente Library, her full-time “home.” With her nomination and selection, Monique joins a select group of librarians honored by Library Journal from several nations and all departments of the library world.

The $35,500 total grant monies that Monique obtained from Verizon and Target for the Rio Hondo College Library went to several projects: an online, interactive information literacy tutorial, the development of new library instruction geared specifically to the Child Development classes, a new Story Time program in cooperation with the College’s Child Development department and the Child Development Center/Lab School, and the recent “storigami” presentation by renowned storyteller Christine Petrell Kallevig. Funds were also used to purchase children’s books, storytelling materials, as well as books supporting the Child Development curriculum on early childhood literacy for the Library.

See Monique’s complete profile here.

This is the ninth year that the Movers and Shakers awards have been handed out by Library Journal, the oldest and most respected publication covering the library field. More than 100,000 library directors, administrators, and staff in public, academic, and special libraries subscribe to this monthly “’bible’ of the library world,” now on its 133rd year of publication.

“I wish I could get help from a librarian when I’m typing up my research paper at the Writing Center!”

If you’re a student in ENGL 30, ENGL 35, ENGL 101, or ENGL 201 and this thought has ever crossed your mind, your wish has been granted – partly.

This semester the Writing Center and the Library have collaborated to provide librarian assistance in the Writing Center in two ways:

1. MLA Citations Workshops – Held every Tuesday starting April 13 until May 18, the 50-minute workshops are intended for groups of up to six students who are in the process of creating a list of Works Cited. Two workshops are held every Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00-1:50 and then from 2:00-2:50. If interested, you can sign up at the table in front of LR124A inside the Writing Center. Workshops are held in LR118D. Remember: You must bring at least one citation that you wish to write in the correct MLA format.

2. Roving assistance – A librarian will be in the Writing Center every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 2:00-3:00 to assist you with your list of Works Cited. She can help you write your citation, edit your Works Cited page, and proofread your drafts. This service starts the week of April 12 and will continue until May 19. No reservations needed, just raise your hand for help.

The Library is also offering quick, drop-in research demonstrations/workshops on specific research tools including MLA formats. For a complete schedule and description of these drop-in workshops, pick up a flier in the Library. Or go to http://library.riohondo.edu and click on the box in the upper left-hand corner, “Drop-in Tutorial Schedule.”

Make use of these opportunities to put that sparkling finishing touch to your research paper!
